How to become a military lawyer in Canada
The Canadian Armed Forces title is Legal Officer, serving in the Office of the Judge Advocate General. The sequence matters: you qualify as a lawyer first. Canada.ca states that all OJAG legal officers are "fully qualified lawyers, members in good standing of their respective provincial or territorial law societies, and are commissioned officers in the CAF" — so bar membership is a prerequisite, not something you acquire after joining.
The route
Complete a law degree, articling and licensing, and be called to a provincial or territorial bar, maintaining good standing. Then apply to the CAF as a Legal Officer, normally under the Direct Entry Officer plan, and complete basic officer training. Practice covers operational law, international law, military personnel law, military justice and training.
Regular Force or Reserve
Regular Force involves relocations after your initial post-training assignment. The Primary Reserve requires a minimum of one night per week plus some weekends through a specific unit, with no mandatory relocation.
What catches people out
Legal Officers are on a separate pay scale from every other CAF officer, benchmarked directly to the Public Service Law Group rather than to military rank pay. The National Defence Act also structurally protects their independence: their legal duties cannot be subject to command by non-legal officers.

Progression, effective 1 April 2025: Captain $9,353, Major $13,730, Lieutenant-Colonel $18,156 monthly. Military Judge is $362,627 a year and Chief Military Judge $373,506. Your rank still sets the band, so advancement in military law is advancement in rank.
