How to become an Air Force medic (AFSC 4N0X1)
The Air Force job people mean by "medic" is Aerospace Medical Service Specialist, AFSC 4N0X1 — apprentice 4N031, journeyman 4N051, craftsman 4N071, superintendent 4N091. Searching that official title gets you considerably further than searching "medic", which the Air Force does not use as a career name.
What you need
Enlistment into 4N0X1, and NREMT certification as an Emergency Medical Technician, which is mandatory rather than optional.
The route
Seven and a half weeks of Basic Military Training, then 98 days of technical training at Fort Sam Houston plus a phase at a designated medical facility. You graduate as a 3-level with credit toward Practical Nursing Technology, then upgrade on the job. Shred-outs open up later: 4N0X1B neurodiagnostic technologist, 4N0X1C independent duty medical technician, 4N0X1D allergy and immunisation technician, 4N0X1F flight and operational medical technician.
What catches people out
This is a licensed clinician track, not a first-aid job. To reach the 5-skill level (4N051) you must pass the NCLEX-PN and maintain a practical nursing credential — on top of the NREMT certification you already needed to get in. People arrive expecting combat first-aid and find themselves sitting a nursing licensure exam.
Medic salary in the US Air Force
Pay follows grade and years of service like any enlisted airman; the NREMT certification and the NCLEX-PN you need for 5-level do not carry their own pay. What they change is your progression speed, because upgrade training gates advancement. Special Duty Assignment Pay applies to some 4N0X1 shred-outs, notably Independent Duty Medical Technician, and is set separately.

These are basic pay only. They exclude the Basic Allowance for Housing, which varies by duty station and dependants, the Basic Allowance for Subsistence, and any special or incentive pays. Both allowances are untaxed, so total compensation is meaningfully higher than the table shows — comparing a military figure against a civilian salary is not comparing like with like.

This guide covers how to get in. Whether you should is a different question. Gyfted's career quiz works from how you actually operate — how you handle pressure, structure and other people — rather than from a job title you have already picked.
