How to become a captain in the US Air Force
Captain is a rank, pay grade O-3, and you cannot apply for it. You apply for a commission, serve as a second lieutenant and then a first lieutenant, and a central selection board promotes you. So the useful question is not how to become a captain but how to commission and how long the road is.
The three commissioning routes
The US Air Force Academy. Air Force ROTC. And Officer Training School — 30 hours of prerequisite distance learning plus eight weeks in residence, open to college graduates, commissioning into Active Duty, Reserve, Air National Guard or the Space Force. Medical professionals have a five-week off-ramp.
The timeline
Commission as O-1. Promote to first lieutenant, O-2. Then 10 U.S.C. § 619(a)(1)(B) requires two years in grade as a first lieutenant before you can be considered for O-3. A central promotion selection board convened under 10 U.S.C. § 611(a) then makes the selection. In practice promotion to captain is fully-qualified rather than sharply competitive, arriving at roughly the four-year point of commissioned service.
What catches people out
The two-year figure is a floor, not a schedule. 10 U.S.C. § 619(a)(3) lets the service secretary prescribe a longer period "when the needs of the service require" — so the law permits the Air Force to lengthen the road to captain without any statutory change. The two-year minimum is also newer than most people assume: before 1 October 2008 it was eighteen months.
Captain salary in the US Air Force
Captain is O-3. Pay rises on two axes at once, which is the thing most people miss: promotion moves you between rows, and years of service move you along a row automatically. An O-3 at four years earns $7,382.70; the same O-3 at twelve earns $8,788.20 with no promotion at all. But O-3 pay caps around fourteen years at $9,004.20 — past that point the only way up is O-4.

These are basic pay only. They exclude the Basic Allowance for Housing, which varies by duty station and dependants, the Basic Allowance for Subsistence, and any special or incentive pays. Both allowances are untaxed, so total compensation is meaningfully higher than the table shows — comparing a military figure against a civilian salary is not comparing like with like.
