How to become a police officer in Singapore
The Singapore Police Force runs several entry schemes and your qualification decides which one you can apply to, so the first question is not whether you are eligible but which door you are eligible for.
The schemes
Police Officer (Direct-Entry Inspector) requires a pass degree in any discipline. Police Officer (Direct-Entry Sergeant) is subject to assessment of your academic qualifications. The Policing-Study Diploma Programme takes NITEC or Higher NITEC holders. All three require normal colour vision. Male applicants must have completed full-time National Service at PES A or B1; women are exempt from that requirement.
Training
Residential at the Home Team Academy — nine months for Direct-Entry Inspector — before posting into investigation, command and staff rotations.
What catches people out
The Minimum Term of Engagement. Male applicants who have not completed National Service face a five-year MTE, and pre-enlistees discharge their NS obligation by serving five years as regular officers on full salary. The sign-on bonuses are also paid in two tranches tied to appointment and confirmation, not as a lump sum on day one — which materially changes the first-year figure people budget around.
Police officer salary in Singapore
The Singapore Police Force publishes starting salaries, which is unusual for a police service and worth using. Direct-Entry Inspector: starting salary up to S$6,704 with a S$20,000 sign-on bonus and INVEST retirement contributions at 13.25%. Direct-Entry Sergeant: up to S$3,860 with a S$35,000 sign-on bonus and 7.75% contributions. Read the sign-on bonuses carefully — both are paid in two tranches tied to appointment and confirmation, not as a lump sum on day one, which changes the first-year figure considerably. Progression runs by rank through the Home Team structure.
