Become a licensed architect in South Africa

To become a licensed architect in South Africa, one must first obtain a degree in architecture from a recognized institution. The degree program typically takes five years to complete and covers a range of topics such as design, construction technology, and building regulations. After completing the degree, graduates must complete a two-year internship with a registered architect or architectural firm.

Once the internship is completed, graduates must pass the Professional Practice Examination (PPE) administered by the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP). The PPE is a comprehensive exam that tests the candidate's knowledge of architectural practice, ethics, and regulations. Passing the PPE is a requirement for registration with SACAP.

After passing the PPE, graduates must register with SACAP as a candidate architect. This registration allows them to work under the supervision of a registered architect while completing the required practical experience. The candidate architect must complete a minimum of 24 months of practical experience before they can apply for registration as a professional architect.

To apply for registration as a professional architect, the candidate must submit a portfolio of work completed during their practical experience, as well as references from registered architects they have worked with. The portfolio must demonstrate the candidate's ability to design and manage projects in accordance with industry standards and regulations.

Once registered as a professional architect, the individual must maintain their registration by completing continuing professional development (CPD) courses and complying with SACAP's code of conduct. Failure to comply with these requirements can result in suspension or revocation of the architect's registration.
