Become a licensed architect in Oregon
To become a licensed architect in Oregon, there are several steps that you need to follow. The first step is to obtain a professional degree in architecture from a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredited program. This degree can be a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) or a Master of Architecture (M.Arch). It is important to note that a degree from a non-accredited program may not be accepted by the Oregon State Board of Architect Examiners.
After obtaining a professional degree, the next step is to gain practical experience through an internship or apprenticeship program. The Oregon State Board of Architect Examiners requires a minimum of 3,740 hours of experience, which must be completed under the supervision of a licensed architect. This experience must be documented and verified by the supervising architect.
Once you have completed the required experience, you can apply to take the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). This exam is administered by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) and consists of six divisions. You must pass all six divisions within a five-year period to become licensed in Oregon.
After passing the ARE, you can apply for licensure with the Oregon State Board of Architect Examiners. This application requires documentation of your education, experience, and exam scores. You must also pass a state-specific exam on Oregon laws and regulations related to architecture.
