Become a licensed architect in California

To become a licensed architect in California, there are several steps that you need to follow. The first step is to obtain a professional degree in architecture from a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredited program. This degree can be a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) or a Master of Architecture (M.Arch). It is important to note that a degree from a non-accredited program may not be recognized by the California Architects Board (CAB).

After obtaining a professional degree, the next step is to complete the Intern Development Program (IDP). This program is designed to provide aspiring architects with practical experience in the field. The IDP requires a minimum of 3,740 hours of work experience in various areas of architecture, such as design, construction documents, and project management.

Once you have completed the IDP, you can then apply to take the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). This exam is a comprehensive test that covers various aspects of architecture, including site planning, building systems, and construction documents. The exam consists of six divisions, and you must pass all six divisions within a five-year period to become licensed.

After passing the ARE, you can then apply for licensure with the CAB. The application process includes submitting your education and work experience transcripts, passing a background check, and paying the necessary fees.
