Become a first responder in Indiana

Becoming a first responder in Indiana requires a combination of education, training, and certification. The first step is to obtain a high school diploma or GED. After that, you can enroll in a training program that is approved by the Indiana Emergency Medical Services Commission (EMSC). These programs are offered by community colleges, technical schools, and other institutions.

The most common type of first responder in Indiana is an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR). This level of certification requires approximately 60-80 hours of training, which includes classroom instruction and hands-on experience. The training covers topics such as patient assessment, basic life support, and emergency medical procedures.

Once you have completed the training program, you must pass a written and practical exam to become certified as an EMR. This certification is valid for two years and must be renewed by completing continuing education courses and passing a recertification exam.

In addition to EMRs, there are other types of first responders in Indiana, such as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Paramedics.
