Become a certified teacher in Connecticut
To become a certified teacher in Connecticut, there are several steps that you need to follow. The first step is to earn a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. You must also complete a teacher preparation program that is approved by the Connecticut State Board of Education. This program should include coursework in education, teaching methods, and classroom management.
Once you have completed your teacher preparation program, you will need to pass the Praxis exams. These exams are designed to test your knowledge of the subject matter you will be teaching, as well as your teaching skills. You will need to pass both the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) and the Praxis Subject Assessments.
After passing the Praxis exams, you will need to apply for your initial teaching certificate. This can be done through the Connecticut State Department of Education. You will need to provide transcripts from your college or university, as well as proof of passing the Praxis exams.
Once you have your initial teaching certificate, you will need to complete a period of supervised teaching. This is known as the Connecticut Teacher Education and Mentoring (TEAM) program. During this time, you will work with an experienced teacher who will provide you with guidance and support as you begin your teaching career.
Finally, after completing the TEAM program, you will be eligible for a professional teaching certificate. This certificate is valid for five years and can be renewed by completing continuing education courses and meeting other requirements set by the Connecticut State Department of Education.
