How to become an MRI radiographer in the UK
In the UK, MRI scanning is done by diagnostic radiographers registered with the HCPC. "MRI technician" and "MRI technologist" are American titles; the UK protected titles are Radiographer, Diagnostic radiographer and Therapeutic radiographer, and MRI sits inside the diagnostic radiographer role rather than beside it. So there is no separate MRI certification to chase — the qualification you need is the radiography degree and HCPC registration.
Who regulates this
The Health and Care Professions Council. Using a protected title without HCPC registration is a criminal offence, not a professional discourtesy. The Society and College of Radiographers is the professional body, not a regulator.
What you need
An HCPC-approved pre-registration programme: a BSc (Hons) in Diagnostic Radiography, or a pre-registration MSc. Then HCPC registration. Postgraduate MRI awards — PgCert, PgDip or MSc, some approved by the College of Radiographers — are career development, not a registration requirement.
What catches people out
Two things. Since the HCPC Standards of Proficiency were updated in September 2023, MRI is core rather than specialist: new graduates must be able to "perform standard magnetic resonance imaging procedures." And overseas-trained applicants do not simply transfer in — the HCPC international route can require a test of competence or a period of adaptation before registration is granted.
MRI technician salary in the UK
Agenda for Change means you can see the whole career ahead of you. Qualify into Band 5, move through its steps, then compete for a Band 6 post — which is where MRI specialism usually sits. The financially significant move is Band 5 top to Band 6 top, £39,043 to £48,117, and it is exactly what specialising in MRI opens up. Band 7 is advanced practice or leading a modality; Band 8a is consultant radiographer. Figures exclude High Cost Area Supplements and out-of-hours enhancements.
