How to become an MRI radiographer in Australia
In Australia, MRI is performed by registered diagnostic radiographers, also called medical imaging technologists. The register has three divisions — diagnostic radiographer, nuclear medicine technologist and radiation therapist — and MRI capability sits inside the first of them rather than forming a separate registration. There is no "MRI technician" title or certificate here, so the qualification to aim at is the radiography degree and Board registration.

The Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia, under AHPRA and the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law.
What you need
General registration in the diagnostic radiography division, via a Board-approved programme accredited by the Medical Radiation Practice Accreditation Committee. MRI-specific practice comes afterwards through employer training or a postgraduate MRI qualification — neither is a Board-issued certificate.
The route
Complete an accredited Australian degree in medical radiation science or diagnostic radiography. Apply for general registration, meeting the Board's standards on English language, professional indemnity insurance, CPD and recency of practice. Then build MRI experience in post.
What catches people out
Registration is not automatic on graduation for everyone. The Board runs a national examination for medical radiation practice, used where a candidate is not otherwise qualified for general registration and where someone is returning after an extended break. Also, AHPRA's own capabilities document contains an Australia–New Zealand comparison in which MRI is a separate registerable scope — that applies to New Zealand, not Australia, and it is a distinction routinely got wrong.
MRI technician salary in Australia
Radiographers in Australian public health services are paid under state and territory health service awards, so the rate depends on where you work.
The Medical Radiation Practice Board publishes no pay scale. It registers practitioners; it does not employ them, and there is no single national figure to publish.
Pay moves with the work you are trusted with: from general diagnostic radiography into MRI, then into senior or chief technologist posts.
No official scale is published for this role, so treat any single figure you find online as a third-party estimate rather than a rate you can rely on.
