To become a certified medical assistant in Puerto Rico, PR, one must first complete a medical assistant training program from an accredited institution. These programs typically take one to two years to complete and cover topics such as medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and clinical procedures. After completing the program, individuals must pass the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) exam administered by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). The exam covers topics such as general medical knowledge, administrative tasks, and clinical procedures. Once an individual passes the exam, they can apply for certification through the AAMA. In Puerto Rico, medical assistants must also register with the Puerto Rico Board of Medical Examiners and obtain a license to practice.
