How to become a mediator in Connecticut
Connecticut does not license or certify mediators, and there is no state credential to obtain. The Department of Consumer Protection's list of licensed occupations runs from Accountancy to Well Drilling — it includes Home Inspection, Hypnotists and Locksmiths — and has no mediator category at all. So the question is not which licence to get, but which route into the work you want.
The Judicial Branch routes
Family mediation is conducted by Court Support Services Division Family Services staff, so one route is employment — the Branch hires salaried Mediation Specialist I and II posts. The J-ADR programme is conducted by a Judge, Senior Judge or Judge Trial Referee. Attorneys can separately apply for Designation as a Non-Judicial Officer to serve in court ADR roles.
The private route
Practise privately. Nothing in Connecticut law gates the title, so a voluntary training credential from a national or private provider is what signals competence. Individual programme rosters — foreclosure mediation, for instance — set their own internal criteria.
What catches people out
The Judicial Branch effectively concedes the vacuum. Its public guidance tells people to vet private ADR providers themselves by asking about experience, specialised education and ethical standards — precisely because there is no statewide standard to check against.
Mediator salary in Connecticut
No general figure exists, because Connecticut does not license mediators and most practise privately at rates they set themselves.
