How to become an EMT in New Zealand
In New Zealand, EMT is a job, Paramedic is the registration. Emergency Medical Technician is a genuine current employment grade at Hato Hone St John, which has run a residential EMT programme since 2022 — so the term is not wrong here. But EMT is not a scope of practice under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act. The Gazette recognises only Paramedic, with specialist endorsements. So an EMT is an employed ambulance officer rather than a registered health practitioner.
The EMT route
Apply to Hato Hone St John's residential EMT programme. You complete the New Zealand Certificate in First Responder at Level 3 and the New Zealand Diploma of Ambulance Practice at Level 5, over roughly six months including about three months of on-road experience.
The paramedic route
Registration with Te Kaunihera Manapou, the Paramedic Council, requires a Bachelor of Health Science majoring in Paramedicine from an accredited institution, plus a cultural safety education course. The three specialist endorsements are Critical Care Paramedic, Extended Care Paramedic and Intensive Care Paramedic.
What catches people out
The Intensive Care Paramedic endorsement closed in April 2025. It remains recognised for existing holders but is no longer an available pathway, and unlike the Critical Care Paramedic endorsement it does not permit drug-assisted intubation. A grandparenting route into the specialist endorsements is open for 18 months only.
EMT salary in New Zealand
Ambulance pay in New Zealand is set by collective agreement, not by a gazetted scale.
That is why no official scale is published: the rates sit in the agreements rather than in any public schedule.
The progression that matters is EMT to registered Paramedic, which requires the Bachelor of Health Science majoring in Paramedicine, and then a specialist endorsement.
