Become a certified counselor in Rhode Island

To become a certified counselor in Rhode Island, there are several steps that need to be taken. First, an individual must obtain a master's degree in counseling or a related field from an accredited institution. Next, they must complete a minimum of 3,000 hours of supervised counseling experience, with at least 1,500 hours of direct client contact. This experience must be completed over a period of at least two years.

Once the required experience has been obtained, the individual must pass the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE). These exams are administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).

After passing the exam, the individual must apply for licensure with the Rhode Island Department of Health, which includes submitting an application, transcripts, and proof of supervised experience. They must also provide references and undergo a criminal background check.

Once licensed, counselors must complete continuing education requirements to maintain their certification. This includes completing a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education every two years.
