Become a certified counselor in Georgia

To become a certified counselor in Georgia, there are several steps that need to be taken. First, an individual must obtain a master's degree in counseling or a related field from an accredited institution. Next, they must complete a minimum of 3,000 hours of supervised counseling experience, with at least 100 hours of direct supervision. This experience must be completed over a period of at least two years.

Once the experience requirement is met, the individual must pass the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE). These exams are administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).

After passing the exam, the individual must apply for licensure with the Georgia Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage and Family Therapists. The application process includes submitting transcripts, proof of supervised experience, and passing a criminal background check.

Once licensed, counselors must complete continuing education requirements to maintain their certification. This includes completing 35 hours of continuing education every two years, with at least three hours in ethics.
