How to become a CDL instructor in Texas
There is no such thing as a Texas CDL instructor licence issued to an individual. What exists is a federal eligibility standard, a state-mandated training course, and a requirement that the school you teach for is federally registered. Meeting all three is what makes you an instructor. TDLR's driver education instructor licence is a different credential entirely — it covers passenger-car instruction and does not apply here.
Who regulates this
Federally, the FMCSA through the Training Provider Registry, under 49 CFR Part 380 Subparts F and G. In Texas, the Texas Workforce Commission's Career Schools and Colleges division, under 40 TAC Chapter 807, Subchapter Q.
What you need
First, meet the definition of a theory instructor or a behind-the-wheel instructor in 49 CFR 380.605 — which requires holding, or having held, a CDL of the same or higher class with the necessary endorsements, plus qualifying experience. Second, complete a truck driver instructor development course of at least 40 hours at a TWC-approved school, per 40 TAC §807.321(a) and §807.322. The 40 hours are prescribed by content, not just by duration: five hours of instruction techniques, six of state motor vehicle laws, eight of driving procedures, and so on. Third, teach for a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry — §807.321(b) requires every Texas truck driver training programme to be listed.
What catches people out
The federal disqualification bar. Under §380.605, if your CDL was cancelled, suspended or revoked for a disqualifying offence, you cannot instruct for two years after reinstatement. Getting the licence back does not restore your eligibility to teach; the clock starts at reinstatement and runs separately.
CDL instructor salary in Texas
In Texas a CDL instructor is paid what the training school sets. There is no individual state licence, so there is no licensed grade for pay to attach to.
Neither regulator publishes a scale. The FMCSA registers training providers and the Texas Workforce Commission approves the schools and the 40-hour instructor development course, but neither sets what instructors earn.
The lever is how much of a school's programme you can teach: behind-the-wheel as well as theory, and a CDL carrying the endorsements for the vehicle classes in demand.
