First and foremost, you need to have a strong understanding of American Sign Language (ASL). This means you should be able to communicate fluently in ASL and have a deep understanding of the language's grammar and syntax. Once you have a strong foundation in ASL, you can begin pursuing formal certification. In Missouri, the Missouri Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MCDHH) is responsible for certifying ASL interpreters. To become certified, you must pass a written exam and a performance exam.
