Frequently asked questions
What are the personality traits of successful entrepreneurs?
Proactiveness, risk-taking, and innovativeness are important personality traits for business success.
Proactiveness is a personality disposition that underlies behaviors individuals engage in to make a change in their environments. Being proactive means taking things into one's own hands rather than waiting for others to decide. It also means being first to identify opportunities and act on them with minimal fear of failure or rejection. When proactive people pursue their ideas or implement changes they believe are for the better, they do not recede in the face of obstacles and persevere until meaningful change occurs.
Risk-taking is a measure of a person's willingness to take risks, whether calculated or thrill-seeking. Any way you look at it, risk-taking is fundamentally about making a decision in circumstances of uncertainty where there is a certain probability of loss. The key for an entrepreneur is to know when to go for it and when to pass.
Innovative people try new approaches rather than rely on an established method. Having an innovator's spirit is key to the entrepreneurial mindset. This is so much so that some treat entrepreneurship and innovation as equivalent notions. From a psychological perspective, the tendency and the ability to innovate depends on many different factors such as creative thinking, non-conformism, novelty-seeking, self-confidence, curiosity, and many more.
What is meant by entrepreneurial personality?
Cecil Beaton's quote describes an entrepreneurial personality quite well: "be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary."
An entrepreneurial personality sees opportunities and exploits them by creating value for themselves and others in a sustainable way. Such people are very sensitive to the existence of areas for improvement, they find their way to challenge the status quo, and create conditions more favorable for their interests and goals. Entrepreneurial people are also not too venturesome in order not to lose too much, and not too cautious to lose too many chances. Moreover, a multitude of their traits and motivations align in ways that contribute towards displaying strong behaviors and tendencies to find and introduce novelty in their surroundings. It is also highly likely that the need to change the established ways of doing things, and contrarianship, are some of the strongest driving forces that motivate such individuals actions and initiatives.
